Weather stations on the highways with Galileosky

Telematics specialists have equipped 50 weather stations with Galileosky devices to transmit up-to-date data on the weather and the current state of the road surface.

Project background

Roads of the region are equipped with professional, high-precision weather stations of the Finnish company Vaisala. Meteorological stations determine wind speed and its direction, humidity, air and road surface temperature, determine the grip coefficient of the road. Data is sent to the Office of Highways server to carry out the objective weather conditions assessment, check the road surface, forecast such unfavorable meteorological factors as ice or pools.

Vaisala weather stations do not have the ability to store data archive, the mechanism for transmitting data to the server has "vulnerabilities" leading to the loss of timely unread data, for example, due to the absence or failure of GSM communication.

It is important to provide the reliable data transmission to the server due to control contractors and determine the required and count the actually performed work. It is the key to the accurate cost calculation and drivers safety on the roads.

Integrator-company specialists have to choose the most appropriate solution of the reliable meteorological data transmission to the server. For example, they checked the possibility to re-equip Vaisala meteorological stations with a standard system to reserve and store meteorological data. A more efficient and less costly solution was to create a data transmission system based on Galileosky devices.

Challenges

  • Provide a backup data transmission channel with 2 SIM cards from different operators
  • Ensure the possibility of long-term storage of meteorological data in the device, when there is no way to send it to the server
  • Monitor the power supply status and notify the responsible persons about its disconnection immediately

Solution

Integrator engineers were familiar with Easy Logic technology and managed to develop a control algorithm for a system based on Galileosky devices. The algorithm tells the device to make a request for data in the Vaisala protocol via digital ports RS 485 and RS 232. The received data is saved in the user tag of the device and is sent to the Road Management server.

The system is organized in the way, that Galileosky tracker initiates data transfer. In case of unsuccessful sending, the device will try to send data, storing all data it in the internal memory.

Thanks to Galileosky devices and the experience of the integrator-company specialists, a reliable alternative to the standard system for data transmission from weather stations to the server has appeared.

The stable information transmission made it possible to dispatch the road equipment in a timely manner to eliminate unfavorable meteorological factors (snow and ice) and check the accuracy of workers' performance and carry out thorough calculations.

For 2 years, the developed solution helped to protect meteorological data several times after a failure of the standard system. At the same time, in the backup system, where Galileosky devices were operating on, no failures were recorded.
