Improving Driver Discipline and Safety: The Impact of Rating Systems on Fleet Economics

14 July 2026

The Challenge of Driver Behavior and Risk Management

Fleet management extends far beyond simple GPS tracking; it requires a deep understanding of driver behavior on the road. Driving discipline directly impacts road safety, cargo security, and the technical condition of vehicles. Transport companies often face situations where violations during trips go unnoticed, and accountability is undefined. The lack of objective data regarding driving styles makes it impossible to fairly evaluate employee performance. Without accurate metrics, building a transparent motivation system is nearly impossible, as driver achievements and infractions often get lost in generic reports.

Linking Ratings to Salary Structures

To address the issue of subjective performance evaluation, management decided to fundamentally change the approach to salary calculations. The primary goal was to implement a system capable of fixing violations and calculating driver ratings based on objective metrics. Financial rewards are now directly tied to the quality of vehicle operation. Fixing violations committed during vehicle operation became possible through the use of advanced telematics terminals and video surveillance systems. This shift allowed the company to move to a new level of personnel management, where every incident — whether it is harsh braking or distraction — is accounted for when calculating bonuses.

The Technological Foundation of Behavior Monitoring

Project implementation required comprehensive vehicle equipment. Every vehicle was fitted with Galileosky 10 terminals, known for their high precision in tracking movement and events. A critical component was the calibration of the built-in accelerometer, which allows for precise detection of physical stress on the chassis and passengers. The terminal records harsh acceleration, harsh braking, sharp turns, and speeding. These technical data points form the backbone of the driving style assessment.

The Role of Video Surveillance in Safety

In addition to telematic data, the installation of the MONTRANS DVR video surveillance system proved crucial. Cameras allow for the monitoring of not just the external environment but the actions of the driver themselves. The system records severe violations such as using a mobile phone while driving, smoking, failure to wear a seatbelt, as well as signs of driver fatigue and distraction. Video evidence eliminates the possibility of unjustified complaints from drivers and creates a transparent control environment.

Automating Calculations and Notifying Managers

Data collection is only half the battle. The fleet management system, enhanced by the Montrans Analytics cloud service, processes vast amounts of information. Specific formulas were developed to calculate driver ratings, taking into account the severity and frequency of violations. Based on this data, a clear motivation scheme was established. Department managers receive regular email reports containing rating information for their staff. This allows for prompt reaction to issues, conducting coaching sessions with drivers, and correcting driving styles in real-time.

Economic Impact and Reduced Equipment Wear

The introduction of a bonus and penalty system for violations demonstrated high effectiveness. Reducing the number of violations committed during trips led to a comprehensive improvement in fleet performance metrics. Safe driving implies smooth acceleration and braking, which significantly reduces mechanical stress on the engine and vehicle aggregates. As a result, the number of unplanned repair works decreased, and the service life of the vehicles increased.

Accident Prevention and Fine Reduction

Beyond technical savings, the project delivered significant financial benefits by preventing incidents. The reduction in the number of traffic accidents was a direct consequence of improved discipline. Drivers, aware of constant monitoring and the rating system, became more attentive and cautious. This led to a decrease in traffic fines received from authorities and reduced costs for repairing damaged transport. Implementing a rating system based on Galileosky equipment and video analytics turned driver control from a formal procedure into a powerful tool for cost savings and safety enhancement.
